Memorial Day weekend is once again serving as the ultimate test of American wanderlust, and this year the numbers are breaking records even as wallets feel the squeeze.
But here’s the twist that’s raising eyebrows across the country. AAA projects a whopping 45 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home between May 21 and May 25 — a new high that edges out last year’s 44.8 million. Road warriors are leading the charge with 39.1 million drivers expected, making up 87% of travelers. Apparently, the open road still beats airport drama, even when gas prices have climbed to $4.53 per gallon from $3.19 last year. Nothing says “summer fun” quite like paying extra just to sit in holiday traffic.
Yet the story gets more interesting when you look at who’s actually packing bags. While demand stays strong overall, lower-income households (making $66,000 or less) are hitting the brakes. Nearly 4 in 10 have no summer travel plans, and their travel spending has dropped, according to Bank of America data. Many are redirecting vacation funds toward everyday realities like gas and groceries. It’s the classic budgeting plot twist: the money has left the group chat.
Meanwhile, middle and higher-income groups are hitting the gas pedal on adventures. They’re ramping up spending, booking trips, and keeping the travel industry smiling. Only about 10% of vacationers are fully canceling plans. Most are simply adjusting — shorter trips, cheaper stays, or destinations that stretch their dollars further. As experts note, travel isn’t slowing down; it’s just getting smarter and more strategic.
The rewards programs are working overtime to save the day. Nearly half of Americans plan to cash in credit card points and loyalty perks this summer, with Gen Z leading the pack at a remarkable 80%. Who says you can’t fight inflation with clever points hunting? The personal savings rate may have dipped to 3.6%, but travelers are proving they’re determined to make memories anyway.
In the end, this Memorial Day looks like a classic American tale: rising costs meet unbreakable traditions, resulting in record travel numbers with a side of creative budgeting. Safe travels, everyone — and may your fuel efficiency be ever in your favor.
