Diesel Just Ghosted Gasoline at the Pump…

The Middle East conflict has sent fuel prices soaring, with diesel outpacing gasoline in a dramatic leap that promises to make everything from groceries to furniture feel the pinch soon enough.

Drivers pulling up to the pump this week got a rude surprise: the national average for regular gasoline hit $3.25 per gallon Thursday, up 27 cents in just seven days, per AAA figures. Diesel, however, decided to steal the show, rocketing 41 cents to $4.16—its highest mark since 2023.

Analysts point straight to the escalating tensions in the Middle East. The Strait of Hormuz, that narrow throat through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil squeezes daily, has seen traffic slow to a crawl amid the conflict. Tankers aren’t exactly lining up for the scenic route anymore.

Patrick De Haan of GasBuddy summed it up neatly: diesel reacts more aggressively than gasoline when key shipping corridors get nervous. Global diesel markets feel every hiccup in maritime flow more intensely.

The real comedy arrives downstream. About 70% of U.S. freight rolls on diesel-powered trucks, hauling everything your local store stocks. Higher diesel doesn’t stay politely with the trucking companies—it sneaks into freight rates and, eventually, consumer prices.

Trucking firms usually cushion the blow with built-in fuel surcharges in contracts. But when prices spike this fast, those cushions deflate quickly. Renewals bring the pain home. Expect a slow but steady creep upward in costs for shipped goods if the situation drags on.

Meanwhile, crude oil joined the party with enthusiasm. Brent crude futures climbed over 3% to near $84, while West Texas Intermediate jumped more than 4% above $77—levels not seen in recent memory before the latest flare-up.

The lag in price pass-through offers little comfort. It’s like watching a bad movie you know ends with your grocery bill looking plumper. Trucking keeps the economy moving, but right now, it’s moving at a higher premium.
