President Trump’s team has decided to go full-on detective mode against more than 50 universities.
Why? Because they think these schools are playing favorites with students based on their race. Like, imagine if your friend got picked for dodgeball just because of their shirt color—it’s kind of like that, except way more complicated (and less fun).
The Education Department dropped this bombshell announcement recently, saying, “Hey, we’re investigating y’all for stuff that might exclude white and Asian American students.”
And get this: they even sent out a memo last month warning schools not to pull any “race-based shenanigans” or risk losing federal funding. Oof, talk about pressure!
Linda McMahon, the Education Secretary at the time, basically said, “Merit matters, people! Stop judging kids by the color of their skin!”
Which sounds nice in theory, but… well, let’s just say it’s sparked A LOT of debate. People are split between thinking it’s fair or totally missing the point.
And guess who’s caught in the crossfire? Big-name schools like Yale, Cornell, Duke, MIT, Arizona State, Ohio State, Rutgers—you name it.
Some of them are scrambling to distance themselves from the PhD Project faster than you can say “tuition hike.” Arizona State was all, “Oh no, we’re done funding them,” while Ohio State chimed in with, “We don’t discriminate, promise!”
But wait, there’s more! Six other schools are being investigated for handing out scholarships that apparently favor certain races. The University of Alabama and The University of South Florida are probably sweating bullets over this one.
Meanwhile, The University of Minnesota is getting heat for allegedly running a program that separates students by race. Yikes.
Oh, and did I mention the plot twist? The Education Department accidentally accused the wrong school—The University of Tulsa—because someone clearly needs to proofread their press releases better.
All of this ties back to a Supreme Court decision from 2023 that said colleges can’t use race as a factor in admissions anymore. Now Trump’s crew is taking that ruling and running with it, applying it to EVERYTHING in education—from K-12 to college life.
One official accused diversity programs of sneaking racial stereotypes into everyday activities. Like, come on, does anyone really think teachers are secretly whispering, “Okay, class, today we’re learning about racial bias… mwahaha!”?
Of course, the teacher unions aren’t having it. They’ve filed lawsuits claiming the whole thing is too vague and infringes on educators’ free speech rights.
So now it’s basically a legal showdown between the government and teachers. Who knew teaching algebra could lead to court appearances?
