Chief Justice John Roberts decided to step into the ring and remind everyone that impeaching judges isn’t exactly how disagreements are supposed to be handled.
In a rare statement on Tuesday, Roberts basically said, “Hey folks, maybe let’s not go full WWE SmackDown every time a judge makes a call we don’t like.”
Well, because President Trump had just fired off one of his classic ALL-CAPS tweets calling for the impeachment of a federal judge who dared to interfere with his deportation plans. Yes, you read that right—IMPEACHED!!!
Because apparently, when someone doesn’t do what you want, the solution is always impeachment. (Side note: If that logic applied universally, half of Congress would have been impeached by lunchtime.)
The drama unfolded after District Judge James Boasberg issued an order halting flights deporting alleged Venezuelan gang members.
But here’s where it gets juicy: the Trump administration claimed they didn’t get the memo in time, so they went ahead with the deportations anyway. Cue the legal jujitsu as the White House defended its actions using an 18th-century wartime law, which sounds about as relevant today as powdered wigs.
Enter Chief Justice Roberts, channeling his inner voice-of-reason superhero.
In a statement released by the Supreme Court’s public info team, he gently reminded everyone, “For more than two centuries, impeachment has not been the go-to move when you disagree with a judge.” Translation: “Folks, there’s this thing called ‘appeals.’ Use it.”
Meanwhile, back at Fox News HQ, Trump was asked about Roberts’ comments during an appearance on “The Ingraham Angle.” Ever the diplomat, Trump responded with his trademark subtlety: “He didn’t mention my name, so I guess we’re cool?”
He then doubled down on criticizing the judge, labeling him a “Radical Left Lunatic” (because why use three words when five will do?) and throwing shade at Obama for appointing him. Classic Trump.
But wait—it gets better!
The whole kerfuffle lit a fire under some of Trump’s most loyal allies. One GOP lawmaker, Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas), announced he was introducing articles of impeachment against Boasberg.
And Elon Musk, ever the peacemaker, chimed in on X to endorse the idea, saying impeachment was necessary. Because nothing screams “due process” like social media endorsements from tech billionaires.
This isn’t the first rodeo between Trump and the judiciary, either. Flashback to 2018, when Roberts famously pushed back against Trump’s habit of labeling judges based on which president appointed them.
“We don’t have Obama judges or Trump judges,” Roberts said at the time, essentially telling Trump, “Take your partisan nonsense elsewhere.”
To which Trump replied… well, something equally memorable, but let’s just say diplomacy wasn’t the highlight.
