Amazon Pharmacy announced Friday it is now offering Novo Nordisk’s newly launched oral version of the blockbuster weight-loss drug Wegovy — turning what was once a weekly needle ritual into a simple daily swallow, with prices starting as low as $25 a month for insured patients and $149 for those paying cash.
This isn’t just convenient — it’s practically revolutionary for the needle-phobic crowd who have eyed those injections like suspicious cafeteria mystery meat. Suddenly, millions who dismissed obesity treatment because “no way am I stabbing myself weekly” might reconsider, potentially expanding the market faster than you can say “same-day delivery.”
The ripple effect? Amazon edges deeper into health care, Novo Nordisk reaches patients who previously ghosted the whole idea, and the competition heats up with Eli Lilly’s oral contender waiting in the wings — all while prices drop enough to make even budget-conscious shoppers pause mid-scroll.
Novo Nordisk kicked off the oral Wegovy rollout earlier this week, with the starter dose hitting shelves at pharmacies nationwide. Amazon jumped in quickly, announcing availability through its digital pharmacy just days later.
Patients with qualifying insurance can snag a month’s supply for as little as $25 — cheaper than a decent restaurant meal for two. Cash-paying customers face $149 for the starting dose, a figure that suddenly makes the old injectable list prices look like highway robbery.
The pill, containing the same semaglutide magic as the injection, promises similar results: meaningful weight loss when paired with diet and exercise. One small catch — it demands an empty stomach and a 30-minute buffer before food, coffee, or other meds.
Consider it nature’s way of enforcing a little morning mindfulness. Amazon sweetens the deal with speedy delivery, including same-day options for nearly half of U.S. customers.
Soon, the pill will appear in Amazon’s prescription vending kiosks at select One Medical clinics — because nothing says “modern healthcare” like grabbing your weight-loss Rx from a kiosk between appointments. The e-commerce giant has been building this pharmacy empire for years, starting with the 2018 PillPack acquisition and followed by the 2022 One Medical purchase.
Now it’s positioning itself as the go-to for everything from books to blockbuster meds. Novo Nordisk isn’t limiting channels either. The pill is already at over 70,000 pharmacies like CVS and Costco, plus telehealth players such as Ro, LifeMD, Weight Watchers, and GoodRx.
Even President Trump’s upcoming direct-to-consumer site, TrumpRx, will offer the starter dose at $149 under a November deal with the administration. Talk about strange bedfellows in the pursuit of slimmer waistlines.
Health experts point out the real winner here: access. Needle fear kept many on the sidelines. A daily pill removes that barrier, potentially bringing in fresh patients who once thought treatment was too aggressive or inconvenient.
Meanwhile, Eli Lilly lurks with its own obesity pill expected to gain FDA approval later this year. The race is on — and for once, patients might actually benefit from the competition. Amazon Pharmacy, launched in 2020, emphasizes transparency and speed.
Customers compare prices side-by-side, coupons apply automatically, and packages arrive at the door without the usual pharmacy line drama. Analysts estimate the service could pull in billions annually.
If this launch is any indication, that projection might be optimistic — in the best way.
